Thumbs up to the Alexandria Girls U-11 Lacrosse Team who won the 16th annual LAX Max tournament in Baltimore this past weekend.  This win continues our areas tradition of producing great lacrosse players. Often these players start developing their talents at a young age, so this win is more than likely a sign of things to come.

Thumbs down to the federal law that restricts our local government from regulating the transportation of ethanol from Alexandrias West End.  The Norfolk Southern ethanol shipping facility operates in close proximity to a children elementary school as well as two housing developments.  NSC had an ethanol spill just last October which makes me second guess just why exactly we let them operate with highly flammable material so close to where children go to play and learn.

Thumbs up to Clean and Beautiful Alexandria, a local community organization that is dedicated to beautifying the streets of Old Town. This past weekend they had more than 80 volunteers help plant ornamental grass and flowers all around the commercial areas along King Street. It is great to see local organizations coming together and improving our already beautiful city.

Thumbs up to the Art League of Alexandria which has been selected to be featured in the Catalogue for Philanthropy: Greater Washington. Philanthropy is an important social responsibility and I am proud that our local Art League has been recognized as an outstanding community endeavor.
