To the editor:
My wife Joan passed away in October of 2008. Since Joan dedicated 34-plus years as a teacher and substitute here in Alexandria, my family and I decided we would work towards presenting a memorial scholarship to a deserving T.C. Williams senior via the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria.
In 2009 we presented the first award to Bridgett Wanzer-McCoy who is currently attending Radford University. This year we presented the award to Hiwottie Demissie who will be attending Richard Bland College in the fall. Ms. Wanzer-McCoy also received a continuing scholarship for 2010.
As our way of thanking the donors for their generosity we are having a Joan B. Funn Memorial Scholarship Donor Reception on Saturday July 31, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Alexandria Black History Museum, 902 Wythe St.
We feel this would be an appropriate way to thank the donors for their contribution and give them a chance to meet Ms. Demissie and Ms. Wanzer-McCoy and their families who will be in attendance.
