Nine years after commercial jets slammed into the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a Pennsylvanian field, Alexandrias first responders took a moment to remember.
Mayor Bill Euille and representatives from the citys police, fire and sheriffs departments tolled a gleaming silver firehouse bell in five sets of five symbolizing the death of a firefighter on the steps of George Washington Masonic National Memorial Saturday.

Euille praised those who fell during the 2001 terrorist attacks and lauded the American people for overcoming the tragedy of that day.

Goodness and generosity of the human spirit It overcame our initial shock, anger and pain, he said. It helped us begin to heal.

Members of the City Council, City Manager Jim Hartmann and State Delegate David Englin joined the Mayor at the ceremony.
