After more than an hour of running, it all came down to just two seconds at the inaugural Woodrow Wilson Bridge Half Marathon Sunday.
Ethiopian Deresse Deniboba crossed the finish line in one hour, four minutes and 44 seconds. His closest rival and fellow countryman, Tesfaye Senduku wrapped up the 13.1 mile race at National Harbor two seconds too late: one hour, four minutes and 42 seconds.
Kenyan Isaac Birir took third in one hour, five minutes and 26 seconds.
Another Kenyan, celebrated marathoner Catherine Ndereba, topped the field of women runners. Ethiopians Alia Aziza and Alemtsehay Misganaw rounded out second and third place.
A full allotment of 4,000 racers competed in the first annual half-marathon, beginning at Mount Vernon, spanning the Potomac River and ending on National Harbors waterfront.
