TITANS GO BACK TO BASICS
Coming off a solid drubbing at the hands of Robinson Secondary School, the Titans are repairing a few chinks in the armor as they prepare for Mount Vernon High School.
Thursday nights 35-2 loss to the Rams came as T.C. Williams struggles to overcome key injuries, including Deontre Sanders, Emmanuel Sarpong and star senior offensive lineman Jay Whitmire, sidelined with a sprained foot.
Whitmire is still questionable for Saturdays game against the Majors. Sarpong and Sanders have resumed practicing this week, said Dennis Randolph, T.C. head coach.
But there is plenty to do while they wait for injuries to heal. Randolph is focusing on keeping the offense on the field and converting drives into points on the board. The Titans failed to do both against the Rams.
We didnt play very well against Robinson. We cant put the ball on the ground, we have to get the ball in the end zone and we didnt do that on Thursday, Randolph said. Were trying to take care of our problems without worrying about the opponent. We have to do the things were capable of doing.
Practice will revolve around improving the teams overall performance more than preparing for Saturdays matchup against Mount Vernon, he said.
CARDINALS FALL IN BATTLE OF BISHOPS
Despite P.J. Zinglers four turnovers, Bishop Ireton head coach Tony Verducci said the sophomore quarterback played up to expectations in the Cardinals 20-13 loss to Bishop OConnell.
Zingler passed for 225 yards on 21 completions out of 29 attempts Saturday. Though Zingler threw two touchdowns, the team fell short in the red zone too many times during the non-league matchup, Verducci said.
You can attribute some of that to our youthfulness four turnovers: two interceptions and two fumbles. Those are the things you live with as you grow up as a team, the coach said.
Improved tackling and ball possession are two keys to success against Benedictine High School Saturday, according to Verducci. But job one is keeping the level of intensity and focus high, he said.
