Officials about-face on meter rates

Business owners channeling the protest era of the 60s got their way Tuesday when the city council voted to slash Old Town parking meter rates to $1.25 per hour until April of 2011.

The 50-cent decrease provides relief for shoppers who were once expected to lug 15 quarters with them to park for two hours. Old Town business owners, who protested at City Hall last week, dont have to worry about running out of change or losing customers to stores with parking lots.

Officials were happy to appease business owners until credit card-able meters are installed next year, but the city will lose $324,000 in revenue, according to a city memo. The council has to find a way to make up the money.
Whatever option we choose, you got to rob Peter to pay Paul, Mayor Bill Euille said.
The new rate will not begin until at least November 12, officials said. It does not apply to the Carlyle area of the city, where multi-space credit card meters are already in place.
