As a controversial Virginia textbooks claim that thousands of black soldiers fought for the Confederacy made national headlines, officials assured parents the book isnt taught in the city.
We do not use that textbook here in Alexandria, said Superintendent Morton Sherman on October 21. We have had a number of media inquiries and some from our politicians to see what Alexendria does use. I commend our curriculum department and our teachers.
The textbook, Our Virginia: Past and Present by Joy Masoff, includes a passage about southern black soldiers historians have contested since its discovery earlier this month.
Though approved by state officials, Alexandrias textbook and curriculum committee passed on the book. The school system employs a book produced by Pearson Scott Forseman instead, officials said.
