The United States Postal Service is investigating the theft of a mailbag after a postman left it out of sight while delivering the mail on North Alfred Street a week ago.

The postman had filled his bag with mail for the even numbered homes after parking on the 400 block about 11:25 a.m. October 21, police said. Grabbing mail in hand for the odd addresses, the carrier left his bag next to his vehicle and began making deliveries.

The bag was out of his sight for about 20 seconds, said Jody Donaldson, police department spokesman. When he returned, the bag was gone.

Its the first theft of its kind this year, Donaldson said.
