First time Turkey Trot champion Sean Graham churned out the five mile course through Del Ray in 24:13 to top off the most popular rendition of the 35-year-old city tradition.
About 4,000 racers shot out onto Commonwealth Avenue by the Cora Kelly Rec Center, the largest turnout in Alexandria’s Turkey Trot history. Though Graham placed first, competitors Frank Devar, 24:16, and defending champion Andrew Dumm, 24:21, were fast on his heels.
Despite the chilly, drizzly conditions, Graham said the day was perfect for a road race.
It wasn’t bad at all all, it was actually kind of perfect. The rain held off and there were a lot of people cheering, he said. It was really fun, a great event.
As usual, runners were encouraged to bring nonperishable donations for A.L.I.V.E!, a local nonprofit feeding impoverished local families for more than 40 years. Graham brought Riceroni and peanut butter.
We did what we could, he said. I hope we can help someone out.
