After weeks of pondering his future in football star senior lineman Jay Whitmire will leave the Parker-Gray Memorial Stadium bound for Charlottesvilles considerably larger Scott Stadium upon graduation, he decided last week.
At 6-foot-7 and 300 pounds, the T.C. Williams athlete was recruited heavily by several big-name programs, including Maryland, Notre Dame and Boston College. He decided Sunday to remain in the commonwealth, verbally committing to the University of Virginia.
I like the coaches a lot and I think theyre going to make it, Whitmire said. Its a really good school. Its a good fit.
Though sidelined with an ankle injury during the first half of the 2010 campaign, Whitmire racked up 22 tackles on defense. A calf injury kept him from playing in the Titans basketball home opener Saturday, though he predicts returning to the court as soon as this week.
Its unclear whether he will play on the offensive or defensive line at UVA, Whitmire said.
Playing at the college level has long been a dream of Whitmires. But he was happy just to have finally made a decision.
Its just good to get it over with, Whitmire said.
