Three local men face multiple charges in connection with a rash of burglaries that blighted Del Ray and Old Town throughout January and left residents boiling.
Police are charging Demarious L. White, 19, Cordell A. Walker, 19, and Deshawn L. Strattman, 18, with burglary, grand larceny and larceny with the intent to sell. The trio was taken into custody following investigations into burglaries in the 100 block of Sanborn Place, the 100 block of E. Uhler Ave., and the 600 block of N. Alfred, police said.
All three were arrested this week, police said. Authorities recovered some of the stolen goods after executing search warrants.
Officials credit solid police work and community outreach for the arrests.
We dont want to instill fear, we wanted to inform the community and make them aware, said Capt. Dianne Gittins, the departments northeast sector commander. The communitys eyes are just as important as an officers eyes. They know who belongs.
The department has stepped up its presence in the northeast corner of the city since the wave of burglaries began, holding community meetings, adding patrols and stepping up surveillance, according to spokesman Jody Donaldson.
Still, police are mum on whether White, Walker and Strattman were behind all of the burglaries. Several cases remain under investigation, Gittins said.
Were not done, she said. Absolutely, [were asking residents to] be vigilant. The message we continually give out, its something we stress, is be aware of your surroundings and be a good set of eyes.
White, Walker and Strattman are being held at Alexandrias adult detention center. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the cases or suspects to call Det. Julie Goble at 703-838-4082 or the Crime Solvers tip line at 703-838-4858.
