The citys citizen corps council wants to partner with Alexandria City Public Schools to help local families prepare for worst-case scenarios.
Amy Olson, the school boards representative on the council, asked officials to consider strengthening ties with the city-backed group. Established in 2005, the council works to ready residents for disasters through preparedness and volunteerism.
We are hoping that the school board will go into an alliance with us so we can do outreach through the schools, she said. Even homeland security and FEMA are looking at the ways they can go through you and get families and individuals prepared for an emergency.
The first step is developing an outreach plan and meeting with students and their families, according to Olson.
