



Thousands of miles from the destruction of devastating earthquakes in Japan and New Zealand, local students raised money for the survivors of the twin Pacific tragedies.
Selling freshly baked goods, some donated from the Firehook Bakery and Buzz Bakery, students from Lyles Crouch Traditional Academy raised $525 for victims of the two natural disasters over the weekend.
At least 166 people died in the 6.3 magnitude February quake, which wreaked havoc on Christchurch, disrupting sewer, power and transportation infrastructure.
The more recent Japanese 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami have killed about 11,000 people, though a further roughly 16,700 remain missing, according to various media accounts of the tragedy.
