Cross off another chore on the T.C. Williams basketball squad’s to-do list this season, the Titans are once again AAA Northern Region champions after a 59-54 win over Annandale Monday night.
The two teams have met four times during the 2010-11 regular season campaign and twice in tournament title games with the Titans emerging victorious both times. It’s a fitting turn of events after the Atoms knocked the Titans out of the playoffs in the first round of last season’s Patriot District tournament.
Despite a typical slow start the Titans had a mere 17 points by halftime T.C. revved up their offense in the latter half of the game. A 22-point third quarter and a 20-point fourth quarter put the game away for the Titans.
For the second straight tournament game, seniors Rick Matthews, 17 points, and Jamal Pullen, 13 points, have led their teammates in scoring.
With the win, T.C. heads into the Virginia AAA State tournament as the top-seeded northern region team. They’ll face the as yet undetermined second-seeded eastern team either Friday or Saturday.
