Polish Ambassador Robert Kupiecki joined elected officials, religious leaders, Holocaust survivors and onlookers at City Hall for Alexandrias annual Days of Remembrance ceremony Wednesday.

Survivor Charlene Schiff, originally from Poland, told a solemn crowd stories of her youth during World War II, when she was dehumanized by Nazis.

The ambassador made remarks afterward.

It is the obligation of all decent people everywhere to remember all those who perished and to make sure their faces, their names, their lives and deaths are not forgotten, Kupiecki said. It is the obligation of all decent people to say never again and to start repeating this obligation now by bearing witness, by passing the truth onto the next generation and by fighting the ignorance and indifference that accompanies evil.

Officials commemorated the event by lighting an electric candelabra.
