Cell phone snatcher foiled by strong grip

A pedestrian walking near the intersection of Cloudes Mill Drive and North Paxton Street foiled a would-be thief by refusing to let go of his cell phone, Alexandria police say.
The victim was walking with his phone in hand when the suspect approached him from behind about 9:10 p.m., June 30. Though the suspect tried to snatch the device, the victim clung on until the would-be thief gave up.
Officials did not release a description of the suspect.
Police recommend residents keep valuables out of sight and secured when not in use, said Ashley Hildebrandt, department spokeswoman. With cell phones in particular, residents are urged to stay aware of their surroundings and report suspicious behavior, she said.
