With the grim specter of seeing their longest losing streak of the season extended to eight games looming, the Alexandria Aces drove in five runs in the seventh inning to secure a comeback win against the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts Saturday.
Down 4-2 in the final inning of the first matchup in the weekend doubleheader, which feature just seven inning games, Aces centerfielder Alex Buccilli singled with the bases loaded. Coupled with a fielding error, the hit shepherded teammates Jon Guida, Zach Lopes and Greg Olenski home.
Jordany Oncay sent Buccilli to home plate minutes later with another single punctuated by a fielding error. Third baseman Kevin Francke joined the fun, driving in catcher Mike Godwin to put the Aces, Alexandrias summer wooden-bat collegiate team, ahead, 7-4.
The good times didnt last. Fresh off their first win since June, the Aces bats cooled in the second game. Godwin scored the teams sole run in a 2-1 defeat. Pitcher David Drinks was charged with the loss.
The split doubleheader at Frank E. Mann Field keeps the Aces locked in seventh place in the Cal Ripkin Sr. Collegiate Baseball League with an 11-19 record. They head into their next matchup against the Rockville Express on Wednesday night, after the Times deadline, having won just two of their previous 10 games.
