Gas station turning gourmet?

Filling up could take on a new meaning at Old Town Gas and Auto repair.

The owners of the 834 N. Washington Street business will trade their monkey wrenches for baklava if City Hall approves their bid to build a gourmet market at the gas station.

Al&Ty, Inc. wants to replace its service garage with a Middle Eastern gourmet. The three-pump gas station would remain, according to planning documents.

The combination is unusual, a staff analysis admits, but the applicant believes he can be successful and staff supports his efforts.

City staffers believe the unique business could represent the evolution of the area as a residential neighborhood.

The project, which will be subject to standards for buildings in the Old and Historic District, goes before the citys planning commission September 8.
