The T.C. Williams girls and boys cross country teams showed improvement at MileState.com’s invitational at Pocahontas State Park on Saturday, shaving seconds off of their average finish times.
Facing off against some of the strongest runners in the state, the boys team knocked 22 seconds off of their average time, though just Nick Brown and Anteneh Girma placed within the top 50. Stafford took the team title in the boys race for the second consecutive year.
On the girls squad, Shannon Smythe and Sydney Schaedel medaled, placing 11th and 14th in the annual race. Overall, the team cut 15 seconds from their previous best average time. Lake Braddock runner Sophie Chase won outright, running the 5K in 17:22.
Blacksburg, despite not fielding a runner in the top 15, won the team title in the girls competition.
