To the editor:
I commend Mayor Bill Euille for proclaiming February as a monthlong celebration to mark George Washington’s 280th birthday and the birthday committee for planning and facilitating events throughout the month.
In addition to the annual February celebration, I would like to see the City of Alexandria establish a more tangible and lasting tribute to George Washington as its most famous and revered resident. A bronze or marble statue or other permanent memorial that can be visited year-round by residents and visitors would more appropriately recognize the unparalleled significance of his contributions to the city and the nation.
