The T.C. Williams boys and girls tennis teams are waving goodbye to playing “home matches” in Fairfax County after school officials approved building courts at the high school.

When the state-of-the-art high school went up on King Street in 2007, it came with a football field and track, but no tennis courts. Since then, the Titans of tennis have played so-called home games at Wakefield High School in Fairfax County and practice at a recreation center outside of Alexandria.

Program supporters have long sought installing courts on T.C.’s campus for a variety of reasons, including players having to miss classes in favor of bus trips to other facilities for both home and away matches.

That should change in the months to come. School board members did some juggling with their 10-year, $358 million capital improvement plan earlier this month, approving a $492,000 project to erect six tennis courts at the city’s sole public high school in 2013 or 2014. The courts were originally slated to go up at Minnie Howard, T.C.’s satellite campus.

ACPS staff will update the board with a cost estimate for engineering and design work before construction begins.
