Fairfax cop charged in fatal crash

The 22-year-old Fairfax County Police rookie who caused a fatal crash on Richmond Highway Feb. 12 has been charged with reckless driving after a review of the evidence by the Commonwealths Attorney.

A 33-year-old Alexandria-area woman driving a 2003 Toyota Corolla pulled onto Route 1 and Boswell Drive that day and was struck by a police Ford Crown Victoria, headed northbound on Route 1. The officer was responding to a call for service and had activated the cruisers emergency lights.

Ashley McIntosh of 1410 Oakbrooke Avenue in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital., shere she later died of her injuries. The officer involved in the accident, Amanda Perry, was treated for her injuries and released.

Perry, who has spent a year on the force, was issued a summons at police headquarters. on Friday She remains on restricted duty pending the outcome of an internal administrative review.

At the time, Col. David M. Rohrer, Chief of the Fairfax County Police Department, said he wished to express the department’s condolences and heartfelt sympathy to McIntosh’s family and friends on behalf of the department, and that a comprehensive, balanced and fair investigation of the crash would  be conducted. Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives are in the early stages of their investigation into determining the factors of the crash.
