Boy killed after West End collision

A 4-year-old boy died Saturday after running into traffic on the 6300 block of Stevenson Ave., police say. His mother, who chased after him, also was injured.

The young child wandered out onto the street at about 11:05 a.m. just as an 84-year-old man headed down the road in a 2010 Jeep Commander. After they collided, medical personnel sent the boy to Inova Fairfax Hospital for treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The victim’s mother, also struck by the Jeep, suffered non life-threatening injuries. She was treated at the Fairfax County hospital.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity. The fatal collision remains under investigation and police ask any witnesses contact them at 703-746-4444.

  1. My concern is that some adults are not sufficiently aware of how fast children can move. And some adults are no help at all in terms of children’s safety. Last week I was in front of the UPS Store on Mt. Vernon Ave. when a mother, holding her small daughter’s hand, ran into traffic into the middle of the block in front of a moving vehicle. The child squealed, “Wow, Mom, that was a close one, wasn’t it?”
