The Rise of Thanida Thai Restaurant

Royal Thai and Sushi Restaurant has been reborn as Thanida Thai Restaurant at the same location it was situated at 835 N. Royal St. Thanida Thai acquired the Royal Thai business and kept its best loved recipes.

With the restaurant’s reopening, Thanida Thai added its own dishes to a selected menu of the former Royal Thai favorites. Thanida Thai plans to also carry on the tradition of making the dishes as spicy or mild as patrons request.

At Thanida Thai, owners Jaruvan and Songyodh Tantiyangkul and chef Wanchai Deedanklang are excited about the expanded menu. They recommend the Thanida Thai moo ping, crispy duck salad, choo chee salmon, ka prao moo grob, duck curry and pad Thai.

Deedanklang and his team have worked very hard to enhance the taste of all the items on the menu. Deedanklang has more than 15 years of experience working in Thai restaurants in the D.C. area. Some of his past culinary ventures included gigs at Bangkok Thai Dining Restaurant, Sawatdee Restaurant and PasaThai Restaurant and Bar.

This venture is a dream come true for Tantiyangkul. He was born in Thailand and arrived in Alexandria as a child, attending Francis Hammond Middle School and T.C. Williams.

After graduating from T.C. Williams, Songyodh worked in a variety of restaurants and realized that his passion was to own his own Thai restaurant. His wife, Jaruvan, shared that goal.

“We are excited about our new restaurant,” Songyodh said. “Like Royal Thai, we use fresh and high quality ingredients to prepare our dishes. Plus, we also focus on our hospitality and service since we believe it is one of the most important aspects of your dining experience at Thanida Thai.”

For June and a portion of July, Thanida Thai is holding a soft opening and the grand opening will be in July.

The restaurant will deliver and provide take-out for residents and offices around Old Town. Royal Thai’s customers relied on take-out and delivery for late night working sessions, staff luncheons and office parties as well as dinner at home. Thanida is continuing these services. Yet, new customers and old patrons alike should not miss out on an enjoyable time dining in at Thanida Thai.
