Carpenter’s Shelter hit the $2 million fundraising goal for its New Heights Campaign on Monday courtesy of a $300,000 cash gift from Amazon, Carpenter’s Shelter announced in a news release. Amazon’s contribution was the single largest donation to the shelter’s campaign.
The campaign, which launched in May in partnership with the Alexandria Housing Development Corporation, will fund redevelopment of the shelter’s Old Town location. Carpenter’s Shelter demolished its old facility at 930 N. Henry St. and began construction on the site, which will double as an affordable housing complex, in August 2018.
Completion of the new facility is planned for 2020 and, when finished, the shelter will provide 60 beds, a day shelter for the chronically homeless and a winter shelter. The seven-story affordable housing complex to be located above the shelter called The Bloom will have 87 affordable apartments and 10 permanent housing units, according to the release.
