Classical Movements is one of Alexandria’s delights. In addition to, in normal years, staging worldwide tours of world-class musicians, the organization hosts small concerts in their lovely garden at 711 Princess St.
Those outdoor concerts became a delight to many when indoor artistic venues were shuttered during the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, city staff have shut down the Classical Movements garden concerts by requiring a special use permit that they are making difficult to obtain.
It defies logic that our city gives SUPs out for things like a live animal slaughterhouse near pet grooming and boarding facilities yet is pushing back on quiet, small, enjoyable concerts on a side street in Old Town.
Classical Movements should be granted a SUP now, so their concerts can resume making this pandemic a bit easier to bear.
