The Patriot District concluded its girls tennis competition last week at Wakefield Park in Annandale. Each of the eight schools were represented by two singles players and two doubles teams.
Only the top two singles players and only the top two doubles teams advanced to the Regional competition. T.C. Williams senior singles players Christina McDonnell and Kat Savchyn did not advance.
Hayfield senior Hillary Leake as well as Hayfield freshman Katie Kim also did not advance.
On the other hand, West Potomac freshman Linda Ruamthong did advance to the Regionals in singles competition, with a 3-1 overall record, only dropping the Patriot District Title Match to South County’s Michelle Nguyen.
Ruamthong, teamed up with West Potomac senior Lexi Vlasho in doubles, and finished as Patriot District Runners-ups, also with a 3-1 overall record, also bowing out to South County’s Michelle Nguyen/Lindsay Nguyen (no relation).
During the current week, the top two singles players and the top two doubles teams from the Patriot, National, Liberty and Concorde Districts, squared off in the Regional competition May 12 at the Arlington YMCA.
Neither Ruamthong nor Ruamthong/Vlasho were able to advance to the upcoming State competition.
“Linda really had a wonderful week at the Patriot District Tournament and she has also had a fabulous season,” said Cathy Leary, the energetic West Potomac first-year head coach. “I’m looking forward to working with her for these next few seasons.”
