At its annual banquet Wednesday, the Alexandria Sportsmans Club honored 26 of the best and brightest high schoolers in the city. The awards, recognizing exemplary scholar athletes from local schools, were given to students representing a variety of sports teams, from field hockey and football to golf and crew.
Both public and private school students were honored at the dinner, held at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center. In addition to student awards, Virginia Attorney General Bob McDonnel, from the Bishop Ireton class of 1972, was inducted into the clubs Hall of Fame, and T.C. Williams head boys basketball coach Ivan Thomas received the award for coach of the year.
The club has handed out awards since 1956, as a way of recognizing Alexandria talent.
