The nine area high school football programs did not fare well this past weekend, dropping six of their contests. In previous weeks, five have been victorious in two different weekends and four have been victorious during the other weekend. All nine have only played on four distinct weekends.
Edison 38, Yorktown 0
Powerhouse Edison, currently ranked 15th in the entire metro area by the Washington Post, dismantled Yorktown on the road by the convincing score of 38-0.
The Eagles, coached by veteran Vaughn Lewis, scored early and often in the National District contest.
In North Arlington, the Red, White and Blue Eagles generated all the points that they would need following the opening kickoff return.
The Yorktown Patriots kicked off and Edison senior kick returner/running back/defensive back Corey Washington took the ball 70 yards to the end zone, propelling Edison to a 7-0 lead.
I thought that my brother [Christian] was going to field the ball initially. It was a line drive kickoff. I got the ball and headed to the end zone, stated a pleased Washington.
The Eagles led 21-0 after the first quarter was in the books and also led 38-0 at halftime.
By the game’s end, Edison had amassed 373 total yards of offense with 12 first downs, with many Edison plays encompassing 10, 15, 20 or more yards. Yorktown was only able to amass 159 total yards and seven first downs.
Edison junior QB Levi Barber commented afterwards, We came up here with the idea of scoring as many points as we could.
Fortunately for Yorktown, Edison coach Lewis substituted quite liberally in the second half en route to his 103rd career win at Edison.
The Eagles now stand at 6-0 on the season.
Mount Vernon 49, JEB Stuart 0
Mount Vernon improved to 4-2 on the season with a serious 49-0 thrashing of National District rival JEB Stuart.
The Majors, coached by veteran Tom Glynn, led 22-0 after one quarter and took a commanding 36-0 lead into halftime.
On the evening, senior QB Brian Green ripped off scoring runs of 63 and five yards.
Five other Majors also scored via the ground: Kyle Ricks, Theo Gee, Robert Coleman, Andrew Sable and Kenny Harris.
Ireton 21, St. Stephens/St. Agnes 0
Ireton got back into the win column for the first time since the month of August with a convincing 21-0 victory versus cross-town rival St. Stephens/St. Agnes.
The Cardinals, coached by Tony Verducci in his second season, improved to 2-4 overall. The Saints, coached by veteran Dave Holm, dropped to 4-1 overall.
We had a victorious month of August [an initial win versus Archbishop Carroll]. We didnt have a real good month of September, but here we are 1-0 in the month of October, stated Verducci, who played at the Naval Academy several decades ago.
The Cardinals forced four Saint turnovers on the day.
From what I remember, Ryan Espinoza recovered one of the three fumbles and Ben Wenger recorded an interception, said Verducci after the game.
Ireton took a 7-0 lead into the locker room at halftime and then tacked on two more TDs in the fourth quarter to account for the final margin of 21-0.
Scoring for the homestanding Cardinals: Mike Larrabee, Ryan Espinoza and Doug Vines, all with short runs to the end zone.
The Cardinal offensive line was anchored by center Sergio Rivera, guards Oscar Adams and Ed Harmon and tackles Jake Dreer and Paul Fritts.
Fritts commented following the hard-earned victory, We made some good blocks. We got our running backs up into the holes and they made some great runs on the day. The line and the running backs and our two QBs [Oliver Noon and Mike Larrabee] all stepped up.
Looking ahead to the weekend, Verducci commented, Weve got homecoming on October 11. Its a lot more fun when you win on homecoming as opposed to when you dont.
