After starting the season with two impressive wins, the Bishop Ireton
girls basketball team sports a 2-1 overall record on the youngseason.

Ireton, coached by veteran Mike Hutton, won the St. Stephens & St. Agnes Invitational Nov. 30-Dec. 1, by turning away both the Episcopal Lady Maroon and the SSSA Lady Saints. In game one, the Lady Cardinals knocked off neighborhood rival Episcopal 34-22. It was the fifth consecutive season that Ireton has won the four teamtournament.

The Cardinal and Gold led 8-2, 20-8 and 28-16 after the first three quarters concluded.

I believe that we led from start to finish. Our primary focus was to try to stop their post player – Breeana Jones. She averaged something like 16 points per game last season, said Hutton.

Ireton was paced by senior forward Mary Kate Curry (11 points), junior post Joelle Daguilh (6) and senior guard Nadia Cathan (4).

On Dec. 1, Ireton turned back neighborhood rival St. Stephens in a higher scoring affair, 64-43.

Ireton led 12-6, 32-25 and 49-35 after the first three quarters. We felt that if we were aggressive on the ball that we could disrupt the Saints, said Hutton.

In this game, Ireton was paced by junior post Christina Downie (15), Curry (13), Cathan (13) and junior guard Alana Thurmond (7).

Heading into the current week the Lady Cardinals dropped their first game to the Flint Hill (Oakton) Lady Huskies 51-44.

The game was tied twice and experienced three lead changes in the first
quarter alone – the Flint Hill Huskies led 11-9 after the initial eight minute first quarter concluded.

The home standing Cardinal and Gold outscored the visiting Blue, Green and White 8-3 in the sluggish second quarter to take a 17-14 lead into
intermission.

The Huskies put the pedal to the metal offensively in the second half
however.

Iretons last lead of the contest was 25-23 following a long jumper by Nadia Cathan (4:31 remaining third quarter).

Ireton was paced by Curry (19), Daguilh (9), Cathan and Martin (both
with 8).
