Alexandrians make it to state Hall of Fame
Former West Potomac Athletic Director Jeff Dietze will be added to the Virginia Hall of Fame at the October 27 annual induction ceremony. Dietze oversaw the Wolverine athletic program for many years, including the 1997-98 school year when West Potomac won the AAA Boys Northern Region Basketball Title. In addition to Dietze, two other locals will be inducted this season. Former Robinson Ram girls soccer standout Megan McCarthy and former Powell Valley/University of Virginia running back Thomas Jones, currently playing in the NFL, will be inducted. Former T.C. Williams Athletic Director and track and field coach A.K. Johnson was inducted into the statewide Hall of Fame several years ago.
McCorkle commits to Clarion
T.C. Williams senior Quintas McCorkle, third-place finisher in the heavyweight State wrestling finals, has announced that he will attend Clarion University in Pennsylvania in the fall. McCorkle played varsity football for the Titans under head coach Dennis Randolph and also wrestled for four varsity seasons for the Red, White and Blue. McCorkle chose Clarion over American University and over Belmont University, which is in North Carolina.
All-Met Luncheon honors
At the Washington Posts 24th annual All-Met Luncheon this week, St. Stephens & St. Agnes veteran field hockey coach Marsha Way received the Morgan Wootten Award. The prestigious award is given to only one coach from the more than 300 high schools in the metro area for their present day as well as career accomplishments. Way has led the Lady Saints to 18 Independent School League Championships in her 23 seasons at the helm. In addition, the energetic coach has guided St. Stephens & St. Agnes to an overall record of 415-57-41.
Jefferson Colonial senior soccer standout Will Beckman was honored at the All-Met Luncheon as well. Beckman received the prestigious Michael L. Trilling Award for his combined package of grades, citizenship and athletic achievements a truly outstanding award indeed.
Boys soccer recap
Liberty District member Stone Bridge defeated Concorde District member Robinson 1-0 for the Northern Region Title. Prior to the title game, Jefferson also of the Liberty District defeated Lee (Patriot) 1-0 in the Regional Round of 16 before the Colonials dropped in a 3-1 decision to Westfield (Concorde) in the Round of Eight. The picture was different a year ago, when Jefferson concluded the season as Virginia AAA State Champion.
T.C. Williams (Patriot) defeated Langley (Liberty) 4-2 and West Potomac (Patriot) lost 1-0 to eventual Regional Champion Stone Bridge during the Round of 16. In the Round of Eight, T.C. dropped a 1-0 loss to Robinson, the eventual regional runner-up.
Girls soccer recap
No area teams advanced to the Regional Round of Eight. In the Round of 16, Mount Vernon dropped in a 2-1 decision to Centreville (Concorde) and Edison lost 3-0 to Robinson (Concorde). The Mount Vernon Lady Majors were National District Tournament Runners-ups with a 2-0 setback to Yorktown one week earlier.
Lacrosse season wrap-up
The St. Stephens & St. Agnes girls soundly defeated Georgetown Visitation 16-3 for the 08 ISL Title. The Lady Saints, coached by veteran Kathy Jenkins, were led by Hadley Lankford, who scored five goals, and by Kelly Austin and Charlotte Davis, with four goals each. Under Jenkinss leadership, the Saints have won a number of ISL Titles over the past several decades.
The St. Stephens & St. Agnes boys team didnt fare quite so well in their title game. After an impressive surge just to get to the IAC Championship Game, the Saints dropped in a 5-1 loss to the Landon Bears in the seasons league title game. Scoring for the Red, White and Green, coached by Andy Taibl, was junior Ian Gordon. A week or so later, the Saints concluded their season with a 9-8 setback to Norfolk Academy in the Virginia Independent State semi-final round. St. Stephens finished the season 8-12 overall, which included an impressive 7-2 record over their final nine games.
