Beijing Olympics
Former Mount Vernon High School swimmer Markus Rogan (class of 2000) turned in an outstanding performance at the 29th Olympiad, clocking 1:55.49 during the 200 meter backstroke finals and just missing out on the bronze medal. During the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Rogan claimed the silver medal for his native Austria in the same event, placing him in the top four of the past two Olympic Games. Swimming again for Austria, Rogan, who finished fourth overall in the 200m backstroke, is the only competitor in Beijing that attended an area high school. While at Mount Vernon, Rogan was coached by Cathy Gorsuch.
