Alexandria has a lot to offer in terms of social life. With so many choices, sometimes it can be hard to figure out what to do for fun. If you are in need of ideas, here are a few:
WHAT’S NEW: Everyone is buzzing about Mackie’s Bar and Grill. Located at 907 King St., Mackie’s is a newcomer to the Old Town scene. Owner Sang Lee, who is a familiar face to many in the neighborhood, said he hopes to “create the preeminent classic steak/chop house in Alexandria.”
With classic cuts of beef on the menu, the dining room creates an intimate, upscale atmosphere, while the bar is both energetic and friendly. The bar has a great “neighborhood” feel: a modern jukebox that you can command from your phone, TVs on the walls with sports and news and fun drinks like the “Susie,” named after Sang’s wife and made with vodka, St. Germain, lemon juice and muddled blackberries. If you’re looking to get out and try something new, Mackie’s is the perfect spot.
WHAT’S THE DEAL: Sometimes we all need to conduct our social life on a budget. If that’s the case, swing by T.J. Stone’s (608 Montgomery St.) on a Monday night. Every Monday they feature half-price bottles of wine and burgers.
This special is available both in the bar area and the dining room. If you’re in the mood to watch the game hang out in the bar, as 15 TVs adorn the walls. If you want a cozier feel, try the dining room near the fireplace. With 13 different burgers on offer, including salmon and vegetarian options, there are plenty of choices. Susan the general manager says the Cuban is her favorite.
Although a few of the pricier bottles of wine are off limits from the deal, there are still around 70 bottles to choose from. If you are looking for a nice night out, but are also trying to make your money count, Mondays at T.J. Stone’s are a must.
WHAT’S HAPPENING: If you’re looking for something fun to do but feeling a little bored with the restaurant-and-bar scene, check out The Little Theatre of Alexandria, located at 600 Wolfe St. They will perform a musical rendition of Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol,” from December 5 to 20.
Performances are given Thursday through Sunday evenings, with matinees on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are only $15 and can be purchased online or at the box office. This is a fun idea for a date, a night out with friends, or a family activity.
