The Alexandria School Board voted to appoint board member Meagan Alderton as chair and reappoint Veronica Nolan as vice chair during its virtual organizational meeting on Thursday.

Alderton was appointed board chair in a 6-3 vote. She will will be the second Black female chair in the school district’s history, after Shirley Tyler served as chair from 1980 to 1982, according to ACPS. Alderton has experience working as a special education teacher in several ACPS schools, including George Washington Middle School, Francis C. Hammond Middle School and Samuel W. Tucker Elementary School. She currently works for the nonprofit D.C. Special Education Cooperative.

“I am looking forward to working with my colleagues to ensure equity remains front and center in all our decision-making, in line with the ACPS 2025 Strategic Plan: Equity for All,” Alderton said in an ACPS news release. “It is critical now more than ever before to ensure that we are serving every student and that opportunities are open to all the young people who live in our city.”

Nolan, who has 24 years of education experience, was reappointed as vice chair for the third year in a row.

Board chairs and vice chairs serve for one-year terms in Virginia. However, school board elections occur every three years, which means the next election is set for November 2021.
