After months in dry dock and about $24 million in refurbishments, the USS Alexandria has emerged for active duty again. The crew posed recently in front of the Los Angeles-class nuclear-generating powerhouse, which is 365 feet in length slightly longer than a pro football field — and towers 64 feet, roughly the height of a five-story office building. The ships commander, Capt. Michael Bernacchi, affectionately calls her Alex after her namesakes of Alexandria, VA. and Alexandria, LA. She is one of 54 fast attack subs in the United States fleet and after a top-to-bottom scrubbing which included scraping off the barnacles from her recent tours of the Middle East and the North Pole, Bernacchi calls her “a fine-tuned Maserati.” He marvels, Shes a hunter killer, designed to hunt in deep ocean blue water. These modifications will give her even more speed and technology than she had before.” Bernacchi and members of his crew plan to march in the George Washington Parade on Monday, Feb. 18.
