Snow has come to Alexandria and with the National Weather Service estimating between 5 and 10 inches of snowfall, the city has announced closures of several facilities and a pause in certain services until the storm has subsided.
The city has announced that all government facilities and courts will be closed today (Monday) and that regular service for yard waste, leaf, trash and recycling collection is suspended due to hazardous road conditions. The Curative COVID-19 testing kiosks at Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe St., and Ben Brenman Park, 4800 Brenman Park Drive, and the mobile testing van are also closed for the day. Residents who had appointments scheduled for today will be contacted to reschedule, according to the city.
DASH announced that bus service has been suspended today as well. This comes shortly after DASH reduced bus service as a result of staffing shortages and rising cases of COVID-19 variants in the area.
Residents are advised to stay off the roads if possible, and the snow has already resulted in some road closures. The southbound lanes of Quaker Lane from Duke Street to Seminary Road are closed, according to the Alexandria Police Department. Beauregard Street from Seminary Road to Fillmore Avenue is also closed due to a down tree, police said. For information on local traffic conditions, visit 511virginia.
Alexandria City Public Schools are closed for in-person learning Monday and Tuesday, although, unlike in neighboring school districts, students will continue virtual learning.
Air travel has been significantly impacted by the winter storm today, with the majority of flights getting delayed or canceled at Ronald Reagan National Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport. Dulles and Reagan announced that several flights had been canceled this morning and encouraged people to check with their airlines for any changes in their flights.
