The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra was recently featured in Symphony Magazine, a national trade publication in the classical music industry, for its creative pandemic-era programming, according to a news release.
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in unforeseen challenges for live performance groups, yet the ASO has created a new slate of programming designed around social distancing and compliance with state and national health guidelines.
ASO has developed three new types of programs in response to the pandemic, all of which involve outdoor performances and an emphasis on individual communities. “ASO on the Patio” is a concert series that serves local senior care facilities. “ASO on the Patio” brings live performances to neighborhood association events. The ASO has also continued organizing ticketed events, such as “ASO in the Secret Garden,” offering smaller, chamber music performances in outdoor venues.
ASO Music Director James Ross appeared on the Times’ podcast, Speak Easy, in May to talk about the creative challenges and the ASO’s approach to live performance during the pandemic. Episodes are available on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and podcast services everywhere.
