Local authorities are teaming up with the Drug Enforcement Administration in an effort to discourage prescription pill abuse and theft.

Officers with the citys police and sheriffs departments will collect expired, unused or unwanted prescription drugs and other pharmaceuticals at the Public Safety Center, 2003 Mill Road, or the George Washington Masonic Memorial, 101 Callahan Dr., for destruction between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on September 25.

Most prescription drugs are illicitly obtained from family, friends or the home medicine cabinet, authorities said. They call the existing supply of unused pharmaceuticals an unacceptable risk to public health and safety.
