A day to shop outside

The sidewalks of Old Town will become an outdoor bazaar this Saturday, with merchants from the river to the King Street Metro Station showcasing their products in the neighborhoods first Summer Sidewalk Sale.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., participating retailers will feature deeply discounted summer merchandise, demonstrations of their product lines and special events. Clothing, accessories, childrens items, books, jewelry and much, much more will be available.

There will also be items from galleries and historic sites as well as the Torpedo Factory Art Center and the Historic Alexandria Museum Store. For more information visit alexandriasidewalksale.com.

DASH for school

On Wednesday, August 25, the Alexandria Transit Company, DASH, will hold a school supply drive together with Community Partners for Children.

Passengers who bring new school supplies such as backpacks, notebooks and lunchboxes will receive a free ride on the DASH bus system. Riders are requested to place their donations in the special blue plastic bags attached to the side of the fare box.

Other donations can be left at the Old Town Transit Shop, 1775-C Duke St., across from the King Street Metro Station. Collection boxes at that site will be available until September 3.

Are you an eco-friendly business?

The Alexandria Chamber of Commerce is seeking nominations for its Eco-Friendly Business Award for businesses that have taken voluntary steps to preserve and protect the environment.

With the award, the Chamber is seeking to recognize the most innovative, ambitious and effective initiatives by Alexandria businesses and organizations for achieving environmental sustainability, according to a news release sent out last week.

According to the Chambers, Green businesses operate in a manner that demonstrate a commitment to the environment, energy and water conservation, reduction of their carbon footprint and waste, and increased recycling.

Criteria include: Do they recycle? Do they use local suppliers? Do they turn off the lights at night? And, do they avoid using harmful cleaning products? Entrants will be judged on their commitment, actions, results and innovation.
