Construction is under way for Turnberry Tower, the first ultra-luxury condominium development in Rosslyn marking the start of the residential renaissance for the Arlington County neighborhood. But unlike most construction sites, this one is bringing a unique perspective to the area.
On Oct. 16, nationally acclaimed artist Sidewalk Sam began recreating 20 pieces of artwork to line the fence bordering the construction site at Fort Myer Drive and Key Boulevard. In keeping with his name, Sidewalk Sams gallery features 5-by-8 foot reproductions of famous paintings to be enjoyed by passers-by and motorists.
This is a way of demonstrating that Turnberry Tower, our new ultra-luxurious condominium tower, will also be a masterpiece in this case, a masterpiece of residential living, says Jim Cohen, Turnberrys vice president of sales. Since we will provide residents a one-of-a-kind lifestyle experience, we felt that even our construction site should reflect the same unique flair.
The masterpieces were completed on Friday, Oct. 26 and will remain until the building is completed in the fall of 2009 when they will be auctioned off for charity.
The condominium development project began in November 2005, with the closing of the Best Western Hotel, previously located on the project site at 1850 North Fort Myer Drive in Arlington. Demolition of the hotel building took place in December 2006, followed by the projects groundbreaking in January 2007.
We are excited that Turnberry Tower has become an integral part of redefining Arlington and establishing Rosslyn as one of Washingtons premier upscale neighborhoods, said Cohen.
Who is Sidewalk Sam?
Sidewalk Sam began his career 35 years ago as a street artist. By stepping outside traditional art venues and recreating masterpiece paintings on the sidewalks of Boston, he has been able to bring art out of the museum and into the neighborhood where everyone can experience it. I choose to bring art to the street because it helps bring people closer together, Sam noted.
In addition to his street art, Sam has had many commissions and exhibits, including one-man shows at Bostons Institute of Contemporary Art and the Rose Art Museum. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in painting from Boston University, studied at LEcole de Beaux Arts and worked as a copyist at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Being confined to a wheelchair after being paralyzed in an accident nearly 15 years ago doesnt diminish his artistic talents or his ability to bring art to the community. I love doing work like this, said Sam. I had the nicest neighborhood experience in Rosslyn. It was a sense of family. From the bus drivers and cab drivers to the pedestrians walking by every morning and afternoon, everyone was interested in seeing the developments and they all kept cheering me on. This wall is beautiful, educational and something that will make the city and area residents proud.
White glove service coming to Rosslyn
Rosslyn has always been known as an office town. Now its becoming a real community a true luxury area, said Cohen.
Boasting picturesque views from Key Bridge to Georgetown along with sweeping vistas of the Potomac River, Washington National Cathedral, Washington Monument and the Kennedy Center Turnberry Tower will be the tallest building in Rosslyn.
With 247 units, Turnberry Tower will feature one, two, three and four bedroom condominiums with prices ranging from $800,000 to more than $4 million.
All residences will be constructed with the finest materials and Turnberrys unparalleled attention to detail. Nine- to 12-foot smooth finished ceilings, Snaidero Italian cabinetry, exotic granite countertops, European appliances, Sub-Zero refrigeration, classic marble baths, steam showers, Jacuzzi hydrotherapy tubs, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and expansive balconies are just a few of the standard amenities that await Turnberry Tower residents. Many of the condominium homes also will offer direct-entry elevators that take residents straight from the lobby into their private foyer.
The property will also feature the ultimate in personal service and security with an exclusive spa/fitness center, indoor swimming pool, media room, social rooms, caf, a 24-hour valet, concierge and front desk personnel. The communitys multi-level parking facility will offer assigned spaces and available individual garages for automobiles and motorcycles.
