Which do you use: paper, plastic, or reusable bags?

Once upon a time, grocery bags only came in paper. There wasnt a choice.

Then someone invented the plastic shopping bag and we were offered a choice. Would you like paper or plastic?

Today we are being asked to bring in our own reusable bags. Which is your choice?

Greenversations is the official blog of the United States Environmental Protection Agency. On July 21, the question of the day was, What do you use: paper, plastic, or reusable bags?

Within the space of a week there were 158 responses, a majority of them favoring reusable bags.

According to the EPA in Greenversation, We take shopping bags for granted, especially at the grocery store. Both paper and plastic use resources, multiplied by the billions of bags used annually worldwide. You can reuse and recycle both paper and plastic types, which delays their being thrown away, or you can reduce waste with permanent bags.

The EPA Handbook for Reducing Solid Waste asks consumers to reduce solid waste by following four basic principles:

• Reduce the amount of trash discarded
• Reuse containers and products
• Recycle
• Respond by expressing preferences for less waste.

Tip of the week:  Bring your own bag when you shop, and not just to the grocery store.
