In 1783, the Duvall Tavern had recently been completed at 305 Cameron St. Alexandria town officials hosted George Washington there to celebrate his return from the Revolutionary War. Ten years later the building became Virginias first bank. Durin

g the 20th century, it evolved into a fashion boutique and an antiques shop.

Zoned for either commercial or residential use, it is located across the street from City Hall and the Carlyle House. Now serving as an office building, it  retains its historic charm.

At the same time, it displays the timeless, classical appeal of the symmetrical center-hall Colonial design. The white brick exterior features shuttered and mullioned windows framing the red front door. The third floor features dormer windows framed by brick chimneys. In the rear, a rustic brick wall leads to a charming enclosed garden.

The original random-width wooden plank floors are preserved in the entrance hall and continue throughout the house. Hand-carved arched molding enhances the interior.  Eight of the 12 rooms throughout the house feature the original fireplaces.

A full bath is located on the first floor, along with rooms that  were once available for tavern guests.

On the second level, the main room has been converted into three offices. The central section still features the original fireplace where Washington probably stood during the ceremony.
