This week began with Columbus Day, when our thoughts were turned to the outstanding contribution that the esteemed Italian explorer made to all Americans namely, America. The Italian heritage has enriched our country in other ways as well, including the elegant and exuberant Italianate architectural tradition, which is celebrated in luxury townhouses throughout Old Town.

With its elaborately decorated windows adorning a colorful yellow brick exterior, this authentic Victorian townhouse is an especially fine example of the Italianate style. It is listed at $1,298,800 with Sue Goodhart at McInearney Associates.

The home dates from 1880, when this style flourished. It has been remodeled to combine popular 21st-century amenities with a delightful 19th-century atmosphere. The front hall overlooks the living room and its elaborately molded fireplace. Decorative crown moldings surround the tall windows beneath one of the ornate chandeliers that will remain with the home.  Hardwood floors continue throughout the main floor, and built-in bookshelves appear in the hallway.

The parlor overlooks the dining room, which displays elaborate molding and wainscoting beneath its elegant chandelier. The dining room adjoins the rear kitchen, which features cherry drawers and cabinets, granite counters, stainless steel appliances and a door leading to the patio. The kitchen is open to the family room, which is brightened by its wall of windows.  A powder room is another welcome modern addition.

The second story provides two bedroom suites plus an area that can serve as either a sitting room or a third bedroom.  The master bedroom features hardwood floors and built-in bookshelves. Another Victorian note is sounded in the master bath, with its clawfoot tub in addition to a modern separate shower.

Two reserved parking places are provided.  The schools are Lyles-Crouch Elementary, George Washington Middle and T.C. Williams High.
