Fern and Fernando are four-year-old siblings currently living at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. They are domestic, medium-hair cats and are looking for a permanent home, hopefully to be placed together.
You should be familiar with our weekly features on pets in need of homes. Many of our adoptables are waiting for homes at the AWLA. Did you know that the AWLA is one of the oldest animal welfare organizations in the Washington metropolitan area as well as being the only shelter in Alexandria? Since 1946, the League has had as its mission, To inspire compassion for all living things, to provide shelter for animals in need, and to promote adoptions, animal welfare, and responsible pet ownership in our community.
In 2007, the AWLA found new homes for 1,140 animals, which included cats, dogs, rabbits, ferrets, chinchillas, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, birds and reptiles. My adopted sibling, Tomi the Pomeranian, was one of those lucky enough to find a new home last year.
There are two upcoming events I want to remind you to attend and to support. The first is a new event, the Columbus Day Fast & Furriest 5K Run/Walk. We are honored to be co-chairs of this event, we are very excited, said co-chair Vola Lawson, speaking for herself and co-chair Jack. The second event I want to tell you about is the 2008 Annual Dinner and Silent Auction, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 25, at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Suites. This is our major fundraiser, said Lawson. We need sponsors, advertisers for our program and animal lovers buying tickets for the dinner.
The theme for this years dinner and auction is Somebody to Love, and the AWLA will be highlighting the amazing bond between humans and our companion animals. Just what I write about! Because I am a service dog, I am allowed to go anywhere my person goes. We will both be at the dinner. I hope to see you there.
