In celebration of Black History month The Departmental Progressive Club (DPC) and The Bulldog Connection paid tribute to four Alexandrians for their contributions to the community at its annual Champions of Equality and Justice event last Saturday night.

Honored at the reception at the DPC building on Gibbon Street were Mayor Bill Euille, Ferdinand Day, Ramona Hatten and Katrina Dunlop Ross. All were recognized as champions of and vanguards for the preservation of black heritage and history.

As a former president of the Alexandria Residents Council, Hatten was recognized for her outstanding work with the public housing community.

Day was honored as the first African American chairman of a public school board in Virginia. He was also vice-chairman of both Northern Virginia and the Virginia State Boards of Community Colleges.
The Bulldog Connection is a small group of individuals who are alumni of the former Parker-Gray High School. The group collaborates with the DPC, a private black mens service organization formed in 1927 by seven black men, on other events such as Sports Legends Night, which recognizes athletes and sports figures from Alexandria.
