Alexandria police say the Fairfax County man behind the wheel of a car that struck and killed an 8-year-old Lincolnia boy near Duke Street Sunday afternoon was intoxicated.
Authorities charged Victor M. Aldana, 22, with DUI manslaughter, DUI maiming, reckless driving and driving without a license Monday. Aldana, a Guatemalan national, was heading westbound on Duke Street and nearing the overpass of Interstate 395 when his 1994 Honda Accord veered off the road and struck Brian Hernandez-Chavez and his 31-year-old mother – who has not been identified – about 2:28 p.m.
Hernandez-Chavez succumbed to his wounds at the scene, police said, marking the city’s first fatal pedestrian accident of the year. Emergency responders transported his mother to Inova Fairfax Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
After striking the two pedestrians, Aldana’s car hit a traffic control box before coming to stop against I-395’s northbound guardrail. He did not suffer any injuries and remained at the scene, according to authorities.
Aldana is being held at the Alexandria Adult Detention Center without bond.
