The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking nominations for the 2008 Alex Awards, which recognize individuals, organizations, schools, and businesses that have made exceptional contributions to cultural life in Alexandria.
The annual program, sponsored by the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, promotes interest and involvement in the arts by recognizing excellence in four categories:
Artistic Excellence in an Artistic Discipline
Community Excellence in Service to the Arts
Education Outstanding Contributions to Arts Education
Business Innovative Partnerships between Businesses and the Arts
Last years winners included Wesley M. McCune, a music teacher at John Adams Elementary School, for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education and Dr. James C. Fraser, Alexandria Performing Arts Association (APAA) and Alexandria Arts Forum, for Excellence in Service to the Arts.
This year, Mayor William D. Euille will be honored for his many contributions to the Alexandria arts community.

The Alexandria Commission for the Arts invites colleagues in these sectors to nominate individuals they believe helped to inspire and sustain a creative environment for the Alexandria community throughout this year.
This years theme is Global Arts, recognizing and celebrating the influence of world cultures on art in Alexandria. The awards program features dance, music and theater performances from Alexandria artists.
The 2008 Alex Awards will be presented at the Dr. Oswald Durant Memorial Center, 1605 Cameron St., at 7 p.m. on October 24. Each of the winners will receive an original work of by an Alexandria artist.
