The second annual “Alexandrians Have Heart” food and clothing drive took place Saturday in the SunTrust Mortgage parking lot at the corner of S. Henry and Duke streets, with donations being collected for Alive!, Carpenter’s Shelter and Christ House.

“More than 100 people came by Saturday morning to make donations,” said City Councilman Frank Fannon, who inaugurated the drive last year. “We filled two large truckloads with donated food and clothing thanks to the generosity of Alexandrians.”

In the City Council budget meeting Tuesday night, Fannon called on the private sector to help the community during these strained economic times and echoed those sentiments Wednesday when talking about the success of this year’s donation drive.

“We need those who are able to help the less fortunate,” Fannon said. “The government can’t continue to do it all.”

Fannon also praised the work of the nonprofits and noted their ongoing need for support.

“These organizations tirelessly work 365 days a year helping others in our community who need a hand,” Fannon said. “They desperately need donations now, more than ever.”
