More than 600 volunteers descended on the City of Alexandria last Friday as part of a three-day celebration of service and philanthropy collectively known as “Spring for Alexandria.”

Kicking off the events was the ACT Gala April 29 where Joe Guiffre accepted the Generations of Giving Award on behalf of his family.

Friday morning began with the 12th Annual Business Philanthropy Summit, which was keynoted by entrepreneur and philanthropist Earl Stafford.

Local businesses The Motley Fool and A Show of Hands were honored for their work in the community while Ken Naser of ALIVE was given the Outstanding Nonprofit Leadership Award and Lee Fifer was named Outstanding Nonprofit Board Leader.

Volunteers then spread out to donate time and services in an effort spearheaded by Volunteer Alexandria and worth an estimated $48,000 in labor to the city.

The weekend of service wrapped up on Saturday with the inaugural Alexandria Cares donation drive and children donating their time for Lemonaid Day.

The celebration of events united hundreds of volunteers from all walks of life and continued a new tradition of service and giving back to the community.

As Guiffre said when he received the ACT Generations of Giving Award, “Give without remembering and receive without forgetting.”
