April 25 is National Rebuilding Day and nearly 1,000 local volunteers from Rebuilding Together Alexandria will renovate 52 Alexandria homes belonging to low-income residents, including the elderly, disabled, military veterans and families who are unable to repair their homes because of the flagging economy.
Among the homeowners that have already or will receive help from RTA are:
Mrs. P., an 84-year-old amputee, will have a custom-fitted bathtub installed by volunteers so she can bathe more safely and easily.
RTA will also repair, improve and renovate four homes of families of veterans in Alexandria. These projects are part of the Heroes at Home program funded by Sears and Kmart stores via a nationwide in-store fund-raising campaign during the holidays. Locally, RTA is supported by teams of community volunteers, local businesses (Booz Allen Hamilton, Mirant Corporation, New Horizons Computer Learning Centers, HDR, Freddie Mac and others), and national sponsor Sears Holding Corporation.
RTA and nearly 1,000 volunteers will work on 80 homes and nonprofits during 2009, improving the lives of hundreds of Alexandrians.
